West Jefferson, North Carolina

West Jefferson is located in the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains of Ashe County, North Carolina. West Jefferson was developed around the "Virginia Creeper" Railroad depot in the early 1900s. The railroad carried freight that started the commercial growth in the Ashe County area.

West Jefferson is home to the first cheese factory in the eastern United States. Opened in 1930, Ashe County Cheese offers visitors a chance to watch cheese being made. Also, there is a gift shop for visitors to purchase their favorite cheeses and gifts.

Today, there are many artist and craftsmen in the Ashe County area. The Ashe County Arts Council and the West Jefferson Revitalization Committee was instrumental in establishing the "The Arts District" in the downtown area. Over the last twelve years, murals and artwork have been displayed in West Jefferson to be enjoyed by all. This artwork reflects the history and culture of the West Jefferson area.

The town's location in the Appalachian Mountains has lead to a large number of tourist visiting each year. After visiting the quaint and unique area, many people have made Ashe County their home.
